Maps of Inequality: From Redlining to Urban Decay and the Black Exodus
The map shows every distressed property in Cook County analyzed in the study Maps of Inequality: From Redlining to Urban Decay and the Black Exodus — overlaid on the 1940 Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) redlining map of the Chicago area. Distressed properties include 2022 Scavenger Sale Properties, Cook County Land Bank-controlled properties (as of April 2022) and distressed properties owned by the city of Chicago (as of April 2022). You can zoom in on individual properties and filter the view by property type and location in the 1940 HOLC map. The map also contains a drop-down menu that allows the user to see static views of any municipality or Chicago Community Area that they choose.
We encourage you to read the Study to gain more insight into these maps and what they mean.
