Homeowners can make up to $75,000 worth of property improvements without an increase in assessed value for at least four years. The value of the exemption varies depending on the reduction of the assessed value and the tax rates where the property is located. Any exemption that is granted will be reflected on the Second Installment tax bill.
The Cook County Assessor's Office administers the program. The home must meet the following conditions to be eligible for the program:
- Be occupied by the owner as their primary place of residence
- Be a class 2 residence, which means a detached single-family home, townhome, condominium or multi-family residential building with no more than six dwelling units.
