Cook County Treasurer's Office - 2/28/2005
Tuesday (March 1, 2005) is the last day to make on-time payment of current property tax bills and avoid penalties, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announced today. Pappas also said payment and penalty waivers are available for those in active military service.
Payment of the first installment of tax year 2004 bills (paid in 2005) can be made:
- At more than 250 Bank One locations, some in Dominick's Food Stores, to the close of business Tuesday. Bank One locations can be found at www.cookcountytreasurer.com.
- By mail in an envelope postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service no later than Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Privately metered mail will not qualify.
- Over the internet at www.cookcountytreasurer.com, until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
- At a Cook County Treasurer's Office, until 5 p.m. Tuesday.
- Late payments are subject to a penalty of 1.5 percent per month.
Pappas said men and women on active military service can defer payment of their Cook County property taxes under federal law, and her office will waive penalties on unpaid taxes for six months after the person returns to civilian life.
"Our troops should not have to worry about property taxes while serving our country in the military," Pappas said. "We should do this for them at least."
