Cook County homeowners are missing out on more than $120 million in property tax refunds and available exemptions, WBEZ reports. Treasurer Maria Pappas says most people who are owed tax refunds accidentally double pay. Others don't know they can qualify for possible exemptions, such as the senior citizen exemption.

Every week, Pappas visits minority churches and community centers to run addresses.

"It's like a hunt," Pappas says. "You gotta go out and find them. So I go out and find 'em."

Property owners can search their address on cookcountytreasuer.com to see if the county owes them money.
