With taxpayer anger over property taxes quickly rising, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas is out with her annual look at one of the major factors driving those tax hikes: local government debt, especially for pensions, Greg Hinz of Crain's Chicago Business reports.
The news is not good, though for a change, debt on a percentage basis is rising faster in the suburban portion of the county than in Chicago.
"The anger level countywide is increasing," says Pappas, who sometimes personally greets property taxpayers when they arrive at her office to pay their bill. "Increasingly, I'm hearing people say, 'I've got to get out of here.'"
