Cook County Treasurer's Office - 6/5/2019

An outreach campaign has brought Maria Pappas and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder of Rainbow PUSH Coalition, full circle on this issue of helping senior citizens avoid the Tax Sale, columnist Mary Mitchell of the Chicago Sun-Times writes.
Staff from the Treasurer’s Office has been at Rainbow PUSH headquarters, 930 E. 50th St., Chicago, since April 2, 2019, helping homeowners with their property tax questions. Senior citizens in particular sometimes need help filling out required forms, Mitchell writes.
“I’m finding that as I age, it gets harder to keep up with paperwork. Frankly, just filling out an application can seem overwhelming at times,” she writes. “I have to thank the treasurer for recognizing that.”
In 2000, Reverend Jackson staged a rally and then brokered a deal to save the home of a 76-year-old West Side woman who lost the property after her delinquent taxes were purchased by a tax buyer.
