About 476,000 Have Yet to Pay $1.8 billion on Latest Property Tax Bill, Pappas Says
About 476,000 owners of homes and other real property have yet to pay some $1.8 billion in taxes for bills due Monday, November 3, 2008, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.
Pappas urged payment to avoid penalties of 1.5 percent per month. On-time payment for second-installment bills for tax year 2007 can be made:
- On the treasurer's website, cookcountytreasurer.com., until 11:59 p.m. Monday.
- At more than 300 Chase Bank locations, until the close of business Monday.
- By direct debit from accounts at more than 200 participating community banks, until the close of business Monday.
- By mail postmarked on or before Monday, November 3.
In two installments, Pappas' office collects more than $10 billion in taxes yearly on more than 1.7 million homes, businesses and land parcels and distributes the revenues to some 1,600 local units of government across Cook County.
