$1.68 Billion Unpaid on Current Property Taxes, Pappas Says
About 452,000 property tax bills accounting for $1.68 billion remain unpaid before Friday's on-time deadline, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.
Cook County has more than 1.6 million parcels of real property on which it collects more than $9 billion yearly in two installments. Current bills are for the second installment of tax year 2005, and Friday, September 1, is the due date for payments to be made on-time.
About 452,000 bills for more than $1.68 billion were not yet paid, Pappas said.
Property owners whose bills are received after Friday's due date will be charged 1.5 percent per month in late penalties.
Pappas said on-time payment can be made:
- At www.cookcountytreasurer.com, until 11:59 p.m. Friday.
- At 293 Chase Bank locations, until the close of business Friday.
- By direct debit at 211 participating community banks, until the close of business Friday.
- By return mail, postmarked no later than September 1, 2006.
Owners making on-line payments should have their 14-digit Property Index Number (PIN) ready. Those paying at a bank should have the entire bill and coupon with them. Mailed payments must include the coupon portion of the bill.
