Cook County Treasurer's Office - 2/27/2006
On-Time Deadline is Close of Business on Wednesday, March 1
Cook County home and other real property owners have two days to pay current tax bills on time, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.
The deadline for on-time payments is the close of business on Wednesday, March 1, 2006, Pappas said. Late payments are penalized 1.5 percent per month, by state law.
Pappas said payments for the first installment of tax year 2005 can be made on time:
- On the treasurer's website, cookcountytreasurer.com , from a checking or savings account. The payment will be on time until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.
- At 285 Chase Bank locations today, Tuesday and Wednesday, until the close of business at the bank on Wednesday.
- By direct debit at 213 participating community banks today, Tuesday and Wednesday, until the close of business on Wednesday.
- By mail in an envelope postmarked Wednesday, March 1, 2006 or earlier (metered-mail readings do not determine timeliness).
- Pappas' office collects more than $9 billion in property taxes yearly on more than 1.6 million parcels that include homes, land and businesses, and distributes the revenues to some 1,600 local units of government across Cook County. Second-installment bills for tax year 2005 will be issued later in the year.
"Please pay on time, before the due date, and avoid penalties," Pappas said.
