Illinois permite que las personas mayores aplacen hasta $7,500 al ano en impuestos a la propiedad

Illinois ofrece a las personas mayores un programa de alivio del impuesto a la propiedad que funciona como un préstamo. El Programa de Aplazamiento del Impuesto sobre Bienes Raíces para Personas Mayores permite a quienes califican aplazar hasta $7,500 al año en impuestos a la propiedad.

El préstamo se paga al estado cuando la propiedad se vende, dentro del año posterior al fallecimiento de la persona participante o dentro de los 90 días posteriores a que el propietario deje de calificar para el beneficio. Si desea solicitar el programa, ahora es el momento de hacerlo. Pero actúe con rapidez, ya que el 1 de marzo de 2026 es el último día para presentar la solicitud y pedir el aplazamiento de los impuestos de 2025, que vencen en 2026.

Para calificar, los propietarios deben:

  • Tener 65 años o más para el 1 de junio de 2026.
  • Tener un ingreso familiar de $75,000 o menos.
  • Haber sido dueños y haber vivido en la propiedad elegible durante al menos los últimos tres años.

Los cónyuges sobrevivientes de solicitantes previamente aprobados que tengan 55 años o más dentro de los seis meses posteriores al fallecimiento del contribuyente también son elegibles.

Los solicitantes deben contar con seguro contra incendios o daños para la propiedad y no deben tener impuestos a la propiedad ni cargos especiales pendientes.

Para solicitar, visite el sitio web de la Tesorería del Condado Cook en cookcountytreasurer.com. Una vez allí, haga clic en el recuadro verde que dice Formularios descargables (Downloadable Forms). Luego desplácese hasta el final y haga clic en el enlace Aplazamiento de impuestos para personas mayores (Deferral of Taxes for Senior Citizens).

También hay solicitudes disponibles en la Tesorería, en el edificio ubicado en el 118 N. Clark St., Room 112, en Chicago. Los solicitantes deben presentar copias, no originales, de los documentos requeridos, incluyendo comprobante de fecha de nacimiento y propiedad de la vivienda.

Por ley, el estado prohíbe presentar solicitudes después de la fecha límite del 1 de marzo. El estado cobra un interés anual del 3%, pagadero al fallecer el contribuyente o cuando la propiedad cambia de dueño. Los participantes pueden optar por pagar el préstamo antes.

Si califica, Illinois paga los impuestos aplazados por los participantes del programa. La tasa de interés del 3% aplicada a los impuestos de 2025 que vencen en 2026 es la mitad de la tasa que se cobraba en años anteriores, cuando el estado aplicaba un 6%.

Otros cambios aumentaron el límite de ingresos familiares a $75,000, antes $65,000, y el monto máximo a aplazar a $7,500, antes $5,000.

Normalmente vence el 1 de marzo, pero como la segunda cuota de los impuestos de 2024 venció apenas diez días antes de Navidad, impulsé este aplazamiento para que los propietarios tuvieran más tiempo entre facturas.
