Cook County Treasurer's Office - 11/8/2024
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas will honor military veterans of the United States armed forces by participating in a Veterans Day ceremony Saturday at Chicago’s historic Rosehill Cemetery.
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the May Chapel at Rosehill Cemetery, 5800 N. Ravenswood Ave., Chicago. Pappas will deliver remarks during the event.
“On Veterans Day we remember all the men and women who have served their country in the U.S. military,” Pappas said. “We thank them for their service and sacrifices they made in the fight for freedom.”
The event is sponsored by the 1st Michigan Engineers Company E, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Chicago Light Artillery.
The ceremony will celebrate past and present veterans. Uniformed soldiers will represent all eras of U.S. military history and the event will feature a cannon salute. The Rev. Jerry Kowalski, past national chaplain for the Son of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will speak during the ceremony.
Historic Rosehill Cemetery was founded in 1859. At least one veteran from every war in U.S. history is laid to rest there, including one soldier from the Revolutionary War, 20 Civil War generals and more than 350 Union soldiers.
As Cook County Treasurer, Pappas conducts outreach that includes informing and educating military veterans about potential eligibility for exemptions that can reduce the burden of residential property tax bills.
