Cook County Treasurer's Office - 3/22/2023
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas at noon on Thursday, March 23, will unveil her new Chinese language outreach video at Phoenix Restaurant, 2131 S. Archer Ave. in Chicago.
Pappas will be accompanied by Ald. Nicole Lee (11th Ward) and Sam Ma, Founder & Honorary Chair of the American and Asian Association and an honorary Cook County deputy
treasurer since 2018, to review the video and help distribute it to the community. The video, available in both Cantonese and Mandarin, will show taxpayers how to see if they are due a property tax refund for previous overpayments or missed exemptions. Currently, there are $84 million worth of overpayment refunds and $34 million in missing exemption refunds available.
"This video will help property owners in the Chinese community check for refunds and exemptions and maybe get some money back," said Pappas. "If we owe you money, you can apply directly at cookcountytreasurer.com. Taxpayers don’t have to come downtown to get a refund."
Pappas will also unveil her office’s latest informational brochure in Chinese. It contains information about the property tax system including a tax overview, how to access and download a tax bill and how to pay online for free. The brochure is available in English and 27 foreign languages at cookcountytreasurer.com.
The Treasurer’s website can be translated into 108 foreign languages.
