Cook County Treasurer's Office - 7/22/2002
Because their earning years are behind them, senior citizens can struggle with property taxes. For some, the financial burden is too great and they are forced to sell their homes. Treasurer Maria Pappas wants Cook County seniors to know that help is available.
Pappas administers the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program on behalf of Cook County's senior citizens. The program is a tax-relief program that works like a loan. It lets qualified seniors defer all or part of their taxes and special assessments on their primary homes. The taxes are paid when the properties are sold or transferred. "I want as many senior citizens as possible to know about this great program. It has allowed seniors in Cook County to keep longtime homes with cherished memories despite the rising cost of property taxes," Pappas said.
