Crain's Chicago Business
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas wants to kill a real estate deal that she's not even sure is happening yet: one that would bring a Target store to Water Tower Place, Crain's Chicago Business reports.
Pappas has taken to radio to criticize an unconfirmed plan by the giant retailer to lease space in the North Michigan Avenue mall. She argues that if Target moves in, there goes the neighborhood, which includes names like Gucci, Neiman Marcus and Ritz-Carlton.
Pappas opposes a Target on the Mag Mile not only because she thinks it would debase the city's most celebrated shopping strip, but also because the company has closed two stores on the South Side, one in Chatham, one in Morgan Park. It's an issue of racial equity, in her view.
