Aldermen on Monday took quick aim at Mayor Lori Lightfoot's proposed $94 million property tax hike and potential city layoffs to help close the 2021 budget gap, urging city officials to look elsewhere for new revenue and savings, according to the Daily Line.
Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25) pointed to a report from Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas showing residential property taxes in his ward have increased by 478 percent since 2000. "I don't think this is a progressive budget," Sigcho-Lopez said. "I think this is an immoral budget that's taxing working people."
