Taxpayers are able to search Cook County's records online to check their current tax records by simply entering their 14-digit Property Index Number (PIN). This information reflects multiple payments or overpayments for which a refund may be due.

Instructions to follow when applying for a Duplicate or Overpayment Refund

If you believe you may have a claim on any funds, you must do the following:

  1. Obtain a copy of the Duplicate and Overpayment Application from the County Treasurer's Office or download the form from this Web site.

       Download the Duplicate or Overpayment Refund application.

     
  2. Complete Duplicate and Overpayment Application by filling in PIN, tax year, installment, name, address, city, state, zip code, social security number and signature.

    *Important Note*

    All above-mentioned fields must be completed in order for the County Treasurer to process your request.

     
  3. Locate proof of payment that shows you are entitled to receive a portion or the entire refund amount.

  4. After you have completed the Duplicate and Overpayment Application, attach all proper proof of payment(s) and mail the paperwork to:

Legal Disclaimer

You may only be entitled to a refund for a duplicate or overpayment.

  • The amount posted on a PIN as a duplicate or overpayment is a lump sum amount. It might be several duplicate or overpayments (such as you paid and your mortgage company paid), or even an amount posted to the PIN in error.
     
  • You would be entitled to a refund of only those amounts overpaid which you can show, by proof of payment, that you made in excess of the amount due.
