Taxpayers may search Cook County’s records online to see whether they received exemptions
to which they may be entitled. The search encompasses the current tax year, 2008,
and the three preceding tax years. Exemptions for the current tax year, if granted
are reflected on the Second Installment tax bill.
If a taxpayer did not receive exemptions to which they were entitled, they may apply
for them for this tax year, as well as the three preceding tax years. That application
is for a Certificate of Error, which is issued by the Cook County Assessor. Exemptions
older than three years will not be granted retroactively.
If a taxpayer is granted an exemption, and is entitled because of it to a refund,
that refund must be applied for within 5 years of the date the Certificate of Error
is granted. After that the statute of limitations bars any claim for refund.
If your property tax has exempt status, such as many churches and parks, it is not
entitled to any of the exemptions in the Exemption History information provided.
All blanks by exemptions will, therefore, say 'No.'
